Morikawa captures the 102nd PGA Championship in his home state of California at TPC Harding
SAN FRANSISCO, CA–Any person remotely associated with the PGA saw this coming…Seeing Collin Morikawa’s play on tour is something like witnessing a tornado destined to hit your town from miles away outside of your window. You get a sense that something terrible is on its way towards you, but you are paralyzed by the sheer magnificence of the force. Instead of running away initially, you sit and watch, if only for minute…Then, just as you snap back to reality and frantically gather loved ones, precious resourses and finally begin to escape: you’re hit. The tornado has, in full-effect, indeed arrived.
In only his second major tournament, Collin Morikawa officially put himself on the scene this past week at TPC Harding Park. Morikawa’s sweeping performance laid waist to one of the most decorated and competitive Day 4 leaderboards’ in PGA Championship history. Morikawa’s steel demeanor and mental toughness pushed him past the field, finishing at 13-under, while also leaving us with a moment to remember hitting a shot for the ages to ensure his first professional major championship.
Morikawa’s triumph at TPC Harding was a true culmination of his complete skill set. He has an impressive control over his own game, remaining true to himself while not bowing to trends at the PGA Championship. Despite a modest 290.5 avg. on drives off the tee, Morikawa’s relied on his discipline which was displayed on the greens with his driving accuracy (69.64%), hitting 39 of 56 fairways, landing on the short grass a raw 70% of the time, well ahead of the field average of 50%. Morikawa is the first player since Louis Oosthuizen (2010 The Open Championship) to win a major while leading the field in driving accuracy. Morikawa’s master class putting (8.086) effectively shut the door on all other aspirants before they even realized what was happening.
Morikawa scorched the back 9 and may have hit the shot of the year off his driver on 16th on his way to eagle and glory. MORIKAWA MADE 22 STRAIGHT CUTS TO BEGIN HIS CAREER AND AT 23, IS ONE OF THE YOUNGEST TO EVER WIN A MAJOR in pga tour history

SAN FRANSISCO, CA– Set against the cypress tree-lined Lake Merced, the improved TPC Harding Park Course layout features soft bunkers and graceful undulating fairways. An additional 400 yards was also added to the course to make it a championship-caliber golf facility ready for PGA TOUR action. The course also underwent a greens renovation in December 2013 re-opened in 2014. Here’s the rundown on the season’s first major:
The most popular and polarizing athletes on the PGA tour will be on the attack for the tour’s first major of the season
Justin Thomas regained the World’s no.1 after having ceded the ranking to Jon Rahm for two weeks. Thomas clinched his position after outlasting defending champion Brooks Koepka AT the FedEx Cup St. Jude Invitational King JT is by far the hottest golfer on tour and is the legitimate favorite going into the PGA Championship. After a grueling battle of endurance, Thomas defeated rival Brooks Koepka this past weekend at the WGC St. Jude’s Invitational in Nashville, setting up a juicy showdown featuring the two men who have dominated the past three PGA Championships
Although World’s no. 3 Rory McILroy has been a constant threat on tour, he has failed to produce a major win since he doubled up in 2014 (PGA Championship/The Open Championship)Fan favorite McILroy can hear the whispers of ghosts in the gallery. Ever since his 2014 triumph at Valhalla, Rory has been unable to duplicate his magic touch at majors in recent years, despite his unquestioned position as a tour heavyweight. The world will be watching as McILroy attempts to return to championship form.
Tour phenom Bryson Dechambeau will have all eyes on him as he attempts to drive his way to his first major at TPC Harding
Lefty hopes to lean on his performance at the WGC St. Jude InvitationalPerennial fan favorite, Phil Mickelson is now entering his Golden Age and his rewind performance last weekend in Nashville has inspired the hope within his rabid fanbase that Lefty has another major in him, even at 50. Mickelson will embrace the challenge and the adulation this week in attempt to take down *Julius Boros‘ 52 year old record and become the oldest player on tour to win a major since 1968.

Julius Boros (1949)
*(PGA Championship 1968-48 years, 4 months)
Woods arrived early to TPC Harding, his first time back since the 2009 President’s CupIf Tiger could demonstrate some proximity of his apex game, he will have a shot at the PGA. Having skipped the 3M Open and the WGC St. Jude, Woods has invested his preparation time for TPC Harding, a course he has not visited in 11 years. For that to happen he must remain healthy throughout the duration of the weekend. In this tournament, if Woods gets off to a confident start the golf world will begin to focus its attention on how his body is maintaining. From his swing off the tee to every step that he takes on the march, Tiger will be heavily scrutinized as he chases major no. 16.
Pride. Legacy. Mental Toughness. Left Knee. All will play a factor in Koepka’s historical 3-time defense of the PGA Championship. Koepka appeared to be rounding into form as he maintained a high level of play last week in Memphis, finishing in 2nd place.
RAHMBO: FIRST BLOOD?
Jon Rahm attempts to bounce back after faltering in Memphis this past weekend at the FedEx St. Jude’s Invitational. Rahm’s reign as World’s no. 1 came to an abrupt end after finishing in 52nd place by tournaments end shooting a score (+1). Former 7-time NBA All-Star and Miami Heat legend, Alonzo Mourning has been hosting Zo’s Winter Groove every January dating back to 2000. The event focuses around issues and topics that are relevant to today’s youth. The Winter Groove builds off of celebrity panelists in discussions, a health and wellness day, along with a weekend loaded with golf and physical activity
MIAMI, FL–Alonzo Mourning is a sense of conviction. The 2014 Naismith Hall of Fame inductee and current NBA executive has spent most of his “retired” life donating to his community and has pushed his love for the game of golf as a vehicle to lead others towards helping shape the social and economic causes that affect today’s youth. In 1997, Zo founded the Mourning Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that focuses on youth development through advocacy, education and enrichment .
Mourning took his love for the game of golf and incorporated it into his various causes in 2000 by organizing the Zo Celebrity Golf Classic which he host every January in Miami. The event draws various celebrities, local business members, and public officials who aim to help improve the many youth development programs that Mourning champions including the Overtown Youth Center and Honey Shine programs that are safe havens for the uninterrupted expansion of extracurricular activities and continued education.
ZO’S CELEBRITY GOLF CLASSIC
The former Georgetown Hoya great averaged 21.3 points, 10.7 rebounds and a whopping 5 blocks per game his senior season propelling Mourning to being selected 2nd overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets. His professional career continued to be decorated with accolades throughout but really heated up when he was traded to Miami during the 1995 offseason where he won Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons (1999-2000) and also signed a mega 6 year $105M contract.
Following a brief sabbatical in New Jersey in 2003 and 2004, Mourning returned to Miami for a second stint in 2005 where he won an NBA title in 2006. After declaring that the 2007 season would be his last, Zo tore his patellar tendon in the winter of that year and was forced to bow out on December 17th after 15 seasons as a professional. Mourning immediately turned his focus and energy towards his adopted community of Miami-Dade County directly after his retirement.
THAT ZO SWING
In 2009, 6 FT ’10 Alonzo Mourning was listed as one of the tallest celebrity golfers in the world. Although he holds a massive advantage with his size and length his mechanics are still awkward and he naturally tends to overcompensate with his strength on his drives off the tee
THE WARRIOR AND ADVOCATE
Alonzo Mourning is also famous for his bout with Focal Glomerulosclerosis, a rare kidney disease that is the result of the scarring of the kidneys’ tiny blood vessels, the glomeruli, the functional units in the kidney that filter urea from the blood. The scarring disturbs the filtering process of the kidneys and allows protein to leak from the blood into urine. In 2003 Mourning required a kidney transplant to save his life.
Mourning with former MLB catcher Ivan Rodriguez and PGA tour legend Chi-Chi Rodriguez
“For me to come out of this the way I’ve come out of it and to win a world championship and overcome all those obstacles, and obviously you look at it from the outside, looking in and say, “Wow, that’s an incredible story.” … But in essence it is. And a lot of the reason why I came out of it and I think the reason why … is to help change the lives and inspire others to overcome and not to succumb to what they might be dealing with.”
FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES
Rubbing shoulders with Presidents is nothing new for Zo as he has also golfed with former President Bill Clinton. Here he participates in a foursome that included 2-time NBA champion and legendary sharpshooter Ray Allen as well as the 44th U.S. President Barack Obama in 2015
COMMUNITY FIRST
April 20, 2020 –Mourning and DeliverLean launched an expansive food drive initiative to collect non-perishable food items from South Florida homes in order to expand distribution locations with community partners so they can reach more families in need during the novel coronavirus pandemic
Even throughout the Covid-19 pandemic that has paralyzed public services and put increased strains on charitable organizations, Mourning continues to forge on for the residents in the Miami-Dade region. Zo’s organized food drives have been a staple and has expanded dramatically over the years, encouraging other prominent members of the Miami-Dade region to contribute to their community. This summer, Mourning was able to bring the newly formed Inter Miami CF into the good graces of the people through his program with DeliverLean and other companies that helps donate meals to roughly 400 families a week.
With a long a decorated career at his back and a massive responsibility to fulfill his community’s promise ahead, Alonzo Mourning continues to move forward for the people of the Miami-Dade community.
